Album of the Week 9/24/21

Poppy - Flux

Flux is a vast improvement on Poppy’s last foray into ‘metal’ in I Disagree, for several reasons. First of all, I much prefer the organic instrumentation, the live feeling that Flux has. It feels less synthetic, although I recognize the strengths of I Disagree in that regard. Flux is also catchier, in my humble opinion. But really, the most important thing that sets it apart from its predecessor is its emotional vulnerability. In I Disagree, Poppy was lashing out in anger. In Flux, she’s specifically mourning and celebrating the loss of an abusive person in her life. She’s addressing an open wound, and it’s some really powerful stuff.

8.9/10.
