Lil Ugly Mane - volcanic bird enemy and the voiced concern

I don’t even know what this is supposed to be. It really came out of nowhere. I was not expecting to feel this way about an album by Lil Ugly Mane, not at all. Clocking in at almost an hour, volcanic bird consistently plays with your expectations, in a way that makes every track build on top of the last. It throws elements of grunge, lo-fi rock, hip hop, folk, goth, and breakbeat in a way that feels emotionally charged… and emotionally broken. The cover depicts what I can only assume to be a biker-outfitted Ugly Mane being served drinks by two unsettling Muppets. I’m not sure how thematically relevant that is, but I guess I definitely felt like I was being served drinks by two creepy Sesame Street b-sides while I was listening to this thing. I’m still not entirely sure how to describe my feelings listening to volcanic bird but I will tell you this much: this album is one of the best of the year. No doubt about it.
